Phoenix Education Trust

The Phoenix Education Trust is a national charity that promotes democratic education – by which we mean education in which all members of the school community have a voice and a say in decision-making. Phoenix supports the work of the English Secondary Students’ Association (ESSA) on an on-going basis as we believe that having an autonomous student-led organisation is essential if young peoples’ views about education are to be heard effectively. Working in partnership with ESSA Phoenix provides training and support within schools to ensure that all members of a school community (teachers, students, parents, governors) have the skills, confidence and opportunity they need to speak out about issues affecting them.

Phoenix also supports networking amongst students and teachers both in the UK and across Europe so that schools, students and teachers can exchange practical information on how best to develop democratic practice to suite their own schools’ circumstances. The European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC) based in Germany and Inspiring Schools in the UK are both networks that support the development of democratic and participative education.

Further information about Phoenix and the networks it supports can be found at www.phoenixeducation.co.uk

"If I could change one thing in education then I would introduce a course,
taught in schools and colleges, teaching young people how to deal with the
issues of tomorrow: economic, environmental, and other issues slowly
affecting us all, like terrorism. It would make young people more
politically aware, and some would go on to become the politicians of
tomorrow.
